Theater’s post-ingenues

A few days ago, the Times ran a story on older actresses who are acclaimed on the Broadway stage, but unable to get film work once they pass a certain age.
The story, “Forget the Ingenues; Cue the Grown-Ups,’’ reminded me of the talented pool of actresses we have in this country—and how horribly women are treated in the acting world once they age out of the babe stage.
I don’t think other societies are as youth-obsessed as we are. I’ve seen many foreign films that feature older women in lead roles, and not just as character actresses.
Do you know of any other career that treats accomplished women with such disrespect once they get older?
