Coping with aging parents, growing kids and everything in the middle

Yikes! It’s bathing suit season!

The last time I wore a bikini was 1987.

It was a bold move for someone who’d had a baby a few months earlier. I look at pictures from a vacation to Mexico that summer and I still can’t believe I had the nerve to wear a two-piece.

This isn’t the bathing suit I wore. But I wish it were. Since then, I’ve had maybe two one-piece swimsuits that cover all the squishy parts and make me look like a big old matronly cow. I had one a few years ago with a little skirt. I was glad when it ripped.

The thing is, I love the beach, I love swimming and I love summer. But bathing suits really scare me. The last time I bought one, we were on a family trip to Hilton Head Island and Richard Roundtree was sitting at the pool.

Wow, I thought! How lucky I’d just bought a flashy mermaidish suit at the gift shop.

Of course he didn’t notice. I spent all the time underwater so nobody would see what I looked like.

Well, as Memorial Day Weekend approaches, it’s bathing suit season again. I recently found that Richard Roundtree bathing suit buried under some towels. It looks okay. But I could definitely use a few new ones.

How do you deal with bathing suit shopping?

Excellent post thanks. I also think Google is going to start leaning more towards interactive websites that contain web videos and web presenters. I heard somewhere that Google can even pick out keywords from audio..

About this blog

We've been called "the sandwich generation" and with good reason. Most of today's baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) are dealing with aging parents and college-age kids -- or starting again as empty nesters, adapting to a new life without children at home.

In the Middle will address a variety of topics, including caring for aging parents (medical, ethical, emotional and financial issues) and caring for parents long-distance (what do we do when parents live out of state, or are citizens of another country and we can't bring them to the U.S. for medical care?).

It will also cover the way we deal with the financial and emotional demands of our teenage and young-adult children. Middle age also presents its own "crises": How do we handle that first mailing from AARP? Preventive health screenings (like colonoscopies and bone-density tests)? What are the dating options for those who find themselves single in middle age?

In the Middle will explore all these topics and more, as we share resources and learn from each other's experiences.
