Say what?

I just got off the phone with a friend whose mother is hard of hearing.
Yet she refuses to get a hearing aid. “I don’t want anyone to know,’’ says the mother. “I’m managing fine.’’
Recently, my own mother showed me a newspaper clipping about an interesting new product called the Songbird. It’s a disposable hearing aid that lasts for 400 hours and sells for under $80. You can try one out for $9.95 and then send it back if you don’t like it.
After reading about the product and going on the company Web site, we placed an order last week for two trial Songbirds. They’re not invisible—so my friend’s mother most likely wouldn’t want them—but if they open up a new world of sound, why not try them?
