Coping with aging parents, growing kids and everything in the middle

Do-it-yourself 101

July

Do you love doing laundry? No. Do you do it anyway? Sure.

But judging from a promotional letter that arrived in yesterday’s mail, our hard-working hard-partying college kids have better things to do than pair up socks.

At least that’s the thinking behind “The Campus Laundry”:http://www.eandrcleaners.com/campus_laundry_service.asp, a service that picks up your college student’s dirty clothes and sends them back all nice and clean and folded.

Wait! There’s more. If you’re feeling particularly sorry for your child, you can order the “Look Sharp” plan, which includes dry cleaning and ironing! Just think: Your 18-year-old will never have to sweat over a heavy iron or dig under the couch cushions for quarters. Isn’t life sweet?

Actually, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard about these campus laundry services. When my son started college two years ago, we also got one of these brochures in the mail. I remember opening it, screaming with laughter and throwing it in the garbage.

But this time around, I’m starting to worry. Could parents really be signing up their college freshmen for laundry service? What does this say about our culture?

Only those that have the extra money. It says the rich have it and the poor keep doing all the work. and its getting that the work is getting harder and harder to find. My kids would probably be working at the laundry service.

I remember every October at school, you could walk around and spot all the freshmen who had never done any laundry before. Everything they wore was pink…

Isn’t that half the adventure of going away to college? Having to do all that stuff on your own for the first time and learning to get it right? Then again, there were also the hard-cores who didn’t do any laundry at all and you could tell who THEY were by October, too!

Laundry services sounds like cheating to me.

Linda, please email me. I just had a not so wonderful thing happen to me while visiting my mom. I tried contacting another journalist but received no reply.
    Thanx

About this blog

We've been called "the sandwich generation" and with good reason. Most of today's baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) are dealing with aging parents and college-age kids -- or starting again as empty nesters, adapting to a new life without children at home.

In the Middle will address a variety of topics, including caring for aging parents (medical, ethical, emotional and financial issues) and caring for parents long-distance (what do we do when parents live out of state, or are citizens of another country and we can't bring them to the U.S. for medical care?).

It will also cover the way we deal with the financial and emotional demands of our teenage and young-adult children. Middle age also presents its own "crises": How do we handle that first mailing from AARP? Preventive health screenings (like colonoscopies and bone-density tests)? What are the dating options for those who find themselves single in middle age?

In the Middle will explore all these topics and more, as we share resources and learn from each other's experiences.
