Sneak peek

April
11

I feel very guilty about something I did this morning: I snuck onto “AARP’s message boards”:http://www.aarp.org/boards/.

Yes, I am underage. And yes, I felt like a bit of a peeping Tom. But I have to say this: There were a lot of interesting people talking about a lot of interesting things.

But still, would I want to actually join the American Association of Retired Persons when I turn old enough to to qualify? I’m not sure.

My husband qualified a few years ago, when he turned 50, but he throws the AARP invitations into the garbage the minute they arrive in the mailbox. Two friends told me the same thing. Somehow they can’t deal with the implications of joining an organization whose members are no longer young.
Can the 4:30 early-bird dinner be far behind?

Clearly, being an AARP member has many benefits. If you take a quick look at their web site ”(click here)”:http://www.aarp.org/ you’ll see what I mean.

But still, why does my heart flutter every time I think about joining? Why do I feel weak in the knees?

How have you handled that AARP envelope?

Steve—I edited my original version of this. Never meant to make anybody sound like monsters. Did Bugs Bunny actually say that in an episode?

  3. Steve C.

yes he did.. actually there were 3 versions of the episode.
it featured our orange furry friend Gossamer.

About this blog

We've been called "the sandwich generation" and with good reason. Most of today's baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) are dealing with aging parents and college-age kids -- or starting again as empty nesters, adapting to a new life without children at home.

In the Middle will address a variety of topics, including caring for aging parents (medical, ethical, emotional and financial issues) and caring for parents long-distance (what do we do when parents live out of state, or are citizens of another country and we can't bring them to the U.S. for medical care?).

It will also cover the way we deal with the financial and emotional demands of our teenage and young-adult children. Middle age also presents its own "crises": How do we handle that first mailing from AARP? Preventive health screenings (like colonoscopies and bone-density tests)? What are the dating options for those who find themselves single in middle age?

In the Middle will explore all these topics and more, as we share resources and learn from each other's experiences.
