In the Middle

Coping with aging parents, growing kids and everything in the middle

We’re trendy!

Over the past 24 hours I’ve learned one thing: Middle age is hot!

Let me explain.

I was flipping channels last night when I came upon ob-gyn/author/menopause guru “Dr. Christiane Northrup”:http://www.drnorthrup.com/ doing one of her inspirational talks. The PBS special, “Menopause and Beyond: New Wisdom for Women,’’ was being aired as part of a fundraiser for channel “Thirteen”:http://www.thirteen.org/index.php — meaning there were all sorts of menopause-related bonuses if you made a nice contribution to the station.

For a minute I pondered writing a check for $300. That would get me the full Northrup menopause kit, which includes CDs (that I could listen to on the way to work!), motivational books (that I could read in bed at night!) and a journal in which I could record my innermost thoughts (“Feeling underappreciated today. Wear better outfit tomorrow?’’).

And I would be making a donation to public television too!

I put that thought on hold, turned off the lights and went to bed.

When I woke up, I realized I had forgotten about Dr. Northrup. Instead a small ad in Sunday’s New York Times Book Review caught my eye: The “Poetry Foundation”:http://www.poetryfoundation.org/foundation/2007contests.html is offering a $10,000 award to an American poet who has yet to publish a first book of poetry.

And get this: The poet has to be at least 50.

Wow! I couldn’t believe it.

I’m not a poet. I’m not a novelist. And I’m not yet 50. But for stragglers like me—whose dreams of doing something earth-shaking somehow lose steam over the years—this award seemed tailor-made.

I started composing rhymes in my head. I went upstairs to take a shower. Then I turned on the TV yet again — and who was on the “Today”:http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/3032633 show but makeup artist and cosmetics company CEO Bobbi Brown. She was talking about her new book, “Bobbi Brown Living Beauty”:http://www.amazon.com/Bobbi-Brown-Living-Beauty/dp/0821258346, and how important it is for middle-aged women to feel good about themselves.

And how happiness is the best cosmetic.

I thought for a few seconds about creating a positive energy force above my head (as instructed by Dr. Northrup), throwing myself into happy mode (as directed by Bobbi Brown) and starting to write my first book of poetry.

Then I pulled on my comfy stretch-waist pants, brushed my hair over the gray roots sprouting up top, and confidently marched out of the house.

Isn’t it great to be trendy?

About this blog

We've been called "the sandwich generation" and with good reason. Most of today's baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) are dealing with aging parents and college-age kids -- or starting again as empty nesters, adapting to a new life without children at home.

In the Middle will address a variety of topics, including caring for aging parents (medical, ethical, emotional and financial issues) and caring for parents long-distance (what do we do when parents live out of state, or are citizens of another country and we can't bring them to the U.S. for medical care?).

It will also cover the way we deal with the financial and emotional demands of our teenage and young-adult children. Middle age also presents its own "crises": How do we handle that first mailing from AARP? Preventive health screenings (like colonoscopies and bone-density tests)? What are the dating options for those who find themselves single in middle age?

In the Middle will explore all these topics and more, as we share resources and learn from each other's experiences.
